Ask a business owner when they last confirmed their backups actually work, and you'll often get an uncomfortable pause. ### How often should you back up?

The honest answer: it depends on how much data you can afford to lose. That's your **Recovery Point Objective** — the gap between backups. Ask yourself: *if our systems failed right now, how much work could we stand to re-create?*

- For most businesses, **daily backups** are the minimum
- For active systems — accounting, medical records, order data — **continuous or hourly** backups are worth it
- The more critical and fast-changing your data, the smaller the gap should be

If losing a day of work would be painful, don't back up only once a day.
