By  Jeremy Baxter, President/CEO  ·  1 minute read You've probably got someone who fixes your computers. But who decides your technology *strategy* — what to invest in, how to stay secure, and how IT should support where the business is headed in three years? For a lot of growing businesses, nobody owns that. A vCIO fills the gap. ### What a vCIO actually does vCIO stands for *virtual Chief Information Officer*. It's the strategic, executive side of technology leadership, delivered on-demand rather than as a full-time salaried role. A vCIO typically: - **Builds a technology roadmap** aligned with your business goals - **Plans and manages your IT budget** so spending is intentional, not reactive - **Owns security strategy** — assessing risk and prioritizing the right protections - **Guides major decisions** like cloud migrations, new systems, and upgrades - **Reports to leadership** in plain business terms, not tech jargon Think of the difference this way: your help desk keeps today running; your vCIO makes sure next year is better. ### Why not just hire a full-time CIO? A seasoned CIO commands a six-figure salary — out of reach and honestly unnecessary for most small and mid-sized businesses. A vCIO gives you that same strategic expertise for a fraction of the cost, scaled to how much guidance you actually need. ### Signs your business needs one - You're growing and your technology decisions have become high-stakes - You're spending on IT but aren't sure it's the right spending - You face compliance requirements and need a real security strategy - You're planning a big change — a move, a merger, a major system - Leadership keeps making technology decisions without expert input ### Strategy and support, together The most effective setup pairs day-to-day managed IT with vCIO-level guidance, so the same partner who keeps things running is also helping you plan.
